According to KLM, which is now owned by Air France, nothing in its archives indicates that the airline was involved in a conspiracy or broke any rules.

More than 60 years on, KLM acknowledges that some of its passengers may have been fleeing justice. But it denies that it tried to help them escape and claims it had no responsibility for carrying out background checks on passengers.

It says it was not the airline’s job to check passengers against the list of those who were barred from leaving Germany without exit permits issued by the Allies, especially if they presented themselves in Switzerland, where the law did not require permits. For escaping SS officers, just slipping over the border and turning up at the airport with enough cash was the easy way to get to Argentina.

The Swiss themselves did not have a spotless record in dealing with Nazi fugitives. According to a US Army report from 1948, a payment of 200,000 francs (£30,000 today) would buy Swiss residence papers, which would automatically allow the holder to come and go through Swiss airports with no questions asked.
